Taranaki
Taranaki is a dramatic and rugged region on the west coast of the North Island, dominated by the striking Mount Taranaki (when you can actually see it!). It’s a paradise for travellers who love adventure, nature and exploring mountains and rivers.
The region’s highlight is Mount Taranaki itself - an almost perfectly symmetrical volcanic peak surrounded by lush native forest. Hikes up the mountain range from short walks like Wilkies Pools, to the challenging Summit Track for those wanting incredible views. The surrounding Egmont National Park is also full of waterfalls and goblin forests!
For coastal adventures, the Surf Highway 45 takes you along rugged beaches, black sand shores, and small surf towns like New Plymouth and Opunake. My favourite beach in Taranaki is Back Beach which has a dramatic landscape and the iconic Paritutu Rock, which you can climb if you love heights! New Plymouth also has great cafes, a beautiful coastal walkway and stunning parks and gardens.
After spending almost 3 years exploring the South Island, we'll soon be heading to the North Island to explore it intensively and show you all the best spots - watch this space!!
