Kaikoura is one of those places that makes you pull over just to take it all in. In winter, snow capped mountains drop straight into the wild, blue ocean and it makes it easily one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand. Perched on the eastern coast of New Zealand’s South Island, it’s a dream destination for anyone who loves dramatic scenery and incredible wildlife.

This small town is world-famous for its marine life and it's the main reason that travellers visit this stunning area. It’s one of the few places on the planet where you can spot giant sperm whales year-round, often just a short boat ride from shore or see them from above in a whale watching plane - we have even seen them from the side of the highway!! Dolphins, seals and albatross are regulars here too, and if you’re up for it, you can even swim alongside the dolphins or kayak near curious seals. Our favourite experience in Kaikoura is absolutely the whale watch cruise where we saw so many humpback whales, dusky dolphins and seals - right up close!

There are many walks and hikes in the area that are well worth doing, from easy and short to longer and more difficult hikes taking you high up in the mountains and even one which takes you to a huge NZ fur seal colony.

We have driven through Kaikoura countless times on our road trips and it never fails to blow us away. The coastline alone is worth the drive — we always keep one eye on the road and the other scanning the waves for dolphins leaping out of the water and there hasn't been one time that we haven't seen at least 10 dolphins putting on a show.

If you see “blog coming soon,” don’t worry—it won’t be for much longer! We’re working hard behind the scenes to finish everything in the next few weeks. We’re also adding heaps more guides, updating older blogs and making it SO much easier for you to plan your trip around New Zealand!
