We have been travelling around New Zealand for over 2 years now and have done almost every day hike in each area we have stayed in (still a few to tick off the list!) so when I tell you that this track is in our top 5 list of hikes around New Zealand, you better believe that it's a good one!
The Benmore Peninsula track begins next to the Benmore Dam (which is a cool spot to check out) and walks around Lake Benmore, which is a large man-made lake located in South Canterbury, between Omarama and Otematata. It was created in the 60's by the construction of the Benmore Dam on the Waitaki River and it covers around 27sq kilometers. The lake is a deep blue colour and on a still day the reflections are incredible, as are many lakes New Zealand (click here to check out our favourite reflective lakes).
