We’ve years exploring Marlborough and I honestly believe it doesn’t get the attention it deserves. It's one of the most underrated regions in New Zealand with a mix of rolling hills, dramatic coastlines deep blue waters, thick forests and golden sunshine that seems to last forever, which is no surprise as it's the sunniest place in New Zealand!
We’ve explored it all - lookouts, peaceful bush walks, quirky rock formations, beaches with dramatic coastlines and so many cafes (we LOVE our cafe visits!). There’s a surprising amount to see and do here if you’re willing to slow down and dig in.
The hiking tracks in Marlborough are super diverse which makes it a really nice spot to see a wide range of scenery. There's rolling golden hills with barely a tree in sight to thick green bush surrounded by emerald green water. It really is something special!
At the heart of it all is the Marlborough Sounds - a maze of inlets, bays and islands are covered in thick, green forests. Whether you’re hiking the Queen Charlotte Track, cruising through the Sounds on a boat, or wanting to relax on a quiet beach, this part of Marlborough is next level stunning and every time we go, we feel like we're on a tropical island (our favourite spots are Punga Cove and French Pass).
And of course, there’s the wine. Blenheim and the surrounding wine country are world famous for sauvignon blanc, but there’s a whole lot more to sip and explore.
If you’re after a region that has beautiful hikes, fewer crowds, ocean adventures, wine and all round beautiful scenery then Marlborough is absolutely worth adding to your South Island itinerary.
If you see “blog coming soon,” don’t worry—it won’t be for much longer! We’re working hard behind the scenes to finish everything in the next few weeks. We’re also adding heaps more guides, updating older blogs and making it SO much easier for you to plan your trip around New Zealand!
