Welcome to Twizel, Tekapo, and the wider Mackenzie Country - a region famed for its otherworldly beauty and some of the clearest night skies on the planet! As part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, it draws stargazers from around the world eager to witness the Milky Way at night time. By day, visitors come for the vivid turquoise Lake Tekapo, the scenic drives and the chance to photograph mirror-like reflections in some of the most picturesque lakes in New Zealand and this is why we absolutely LOVE visiting these spots.
One of the main reasons people visit the area is to see the lupines in bloom each spring. They are as beautiful as they look on screen and are well worth visiting!
With its mix of beautiful lakes, mountain landscapes and incredible night sky, it's no wonder the Mackenzie Country is a favourite stop on many South Island itineraries.
