Tongariro National Park

Tongariro National Park is one of New Zealand’s most iconic destinations, a dramatic landscape of volcanic peaks, emerald lakes, and alpine trails that feels like stepping onto another planet. It’s a must-visit for anyone chasing adventure, epic views, or just a truly unforgettable slice of the North Island.

The park is home to the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing, often called one of the best day hikes in the world. This challenging trek takes you across volcanic terrain, past steaming vents, bright blue crater lakes, and rugged ridges — the views are jaw-dropping and totally worth the effort. For those looking for something shorter or less intense, there are plenty of walks and shorter hikes around Whakapapa Village, Taranaki Falls, and Silica Rapids that showcase the park’s incredible scenery without the full-day commitment.

Wildlife and nature lovers will enjoy spotting native birds, tussock-covered valleys, and the unique alpine flora that thrives in this volcanic environment. The surrounding area also offers skiing and snowboarding in winter, mountain biking, and hot pools nearby for relaxing after a long day outdoors.

After spending almost 3 years exploring the South Island, we'll soon be heading to the North Island to explore it intensively and show you all the best spots - watch this space!!
